Polo Fields Update

City of Edinburgh Council adopted the new Local Plan on 28 Jan 10 which designates the Dreghorn Polo Fields as an Area of Great Landscape Value (AGLV) and Local Nature Reserve and therefore not available for housing.  However the fight to preserve this open space may not yet be over.

CAA is represented on the Pentlands Neighbourhood Partnership Walkabouts which occur every two months.  These are opportunities to catch up with Council officials from roads and parks to discuss issues which we feel should be put right.  These may include, blocked gullies, damage to roads and pavements, trees needing cut back or pathways which have become overgrown. The current action list is shown below.

Water of Leith Clean-Up 2009 | Print |

CAA in conjunction with the Water of Leith Trust, carried out its annual cleanup on Sunday 26th April. We were lucky to have a beautiful afternoon for the 50/60 volunteers who turned out to help keep our environment clean. Everyone had such fun.

 Water of Leith Clean-up 2009

It is amazing what we fish out of the river including a header water tank, a scooter, cast iron drain covers, an assortment of signs, drainpipes and metalware.

Funds for Bonaly Country Park | Print |

The Bovril Company - www.bovril.co.uk/revival/ has established a £100.000 fund for allocation to refurbishment of outdoor community projects, one of which is listed as "Welcome to Bonaly Country Park" (Project Code SLRA000089). This is seen by CAA and the Colinton Garden Club as something which should be supported. Please give your support for this project.
To vote, you need to do the following:
1. go to the website http://www.bovril.co.uk/revival/
2. click on "vote here now"
3. click on area 1 (Scotland)
4. click on (page) 7. The last item is "Welcome to Bonaly Park" There is another on page 1, but we are concerned this has been entered in error as a nomination rather than as a "vote".
5. click on "vote"
Once the votes have been received, the higher ranking projects will be evaluated by a panel and, if the criteria are satisfied, a monetary grant allocated. Please do not nominate another project or submit this same one as this may only dilute the response for "Welcome to Bonaly Country Park".

This will be much needed finance for the Country Park as Midlothian Council are to cease their financial support next year.

If the Bovril Company repeat this offer we may look to add key Colinton Projects to it and hopefully gain valued financial help to improve areas in need of support.

THE FUTURE OF THE PENTLAND HILLS REGIONAL PARK

In January Midlothian Council, facing a need to address serious budgetary shortfalls, decided to withdraw from the Joint Minute of Agreement for the Regional Park – the framework involving the City of Edinburgh Council, Midlothian Council and West Lothian Council under which the Park is funded and managed. Midlothian was required to give 12 months notice of its intentions and the current formal position is that Midlothian will withdraw from the Joint Agreement with effect from 1 April 2010.

Friends of the Pentlands have written to all Midlothian Councillors to make it clear that they believe that their decision is the gravest threat that the Park has faced in its 21 years of existence and urged them to retain the existing joint structure, albeit within a revised financial framework. Friends of the Pentlands have received no assurances from elected members but do know that officers are working on a revised Joint Minute of Agreement which, if approved, could be in place this autumn. They are keeping as close as possible to developments and do not want to resort to ‘lobbying’ but, if necessary we will do so.

LITTER PICKING

It was discovered recently that the proportion of Rangers’ time spent on ‘litter picking’ is their fourth most manpower intensive activity out of ten. Friends of the Pentlands have already grasped the nettle and are organising two days per month to help clear up litter. They have designated the first and third Tuesday of each month to help improve our environment. Work begins at 10.00 am and last no more than two hours. If you are able to join the ‘picker-uppers’ please contact John Surtees on 0131 445 4623 or at: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it It is very much a case of many hands make light work and although the litter isn’t much fun the company’s pretty good and the Pentlands, as always, are great. The Rangers are absolutely delighted that we have signed up to help with this task which essentially gives them more time to devote to those duties which are beyond the abilities of we happy amateurs. Please come and join us if you can.
