History of Cuddies Lane Mural

The Cuddies Lane mural emerged as the second major phase of Colinton’s growing art trail, building on the success of the Colinton Tunnel project. Planning for this new artwork began in 2020, when the Colinton Community Association (CAA) decided to revitalise the narrow pedestrian lane that links the village centre with Spylaw Street. Once described as a “grim gully,” the lane was identified as a prime location for a heritage‑focused mural that would visually connect the village with the tunnel.
Work formally began in May 2025, led by muralist Chris Rutterford, the artist behind the Colinton Tunnel mural. Rutterford grew up in Colinton and has spoken of the honour of creating a second major artwork for the village. He collaborated closely with Eddie Banks, an 82‑year‑old local artist who assisted with painting and detailing throughout the project. Early studio footage released by the Colinton Tunnel charity showed Rutterford developing the initial designs, which aimed to depict the historic character of Cuddies Lane and its role in village life.
The mural was officially unveiled on 25 July 2025, in a ceremony attended by Sue Webber MSP and Dr Scott Arthur MP, alongside a large gathering of local residents. The artwork transformed the length of Cuddies Lane into a vivid historical tableau, featuring horses, drovers, village trades, and scenes inspired by Colinton’s long heritage. The CAA led the planning and fundraising, ensuring the project reflected community priorities and complemented the tunnel mural’s storytelling.
Rutterford described the mural as an affectionate celebration of Colinton’s past, drawing on the village’s 600‑year history. The artwork includes references to the old smiddy and other period details that anchor the mural firmly in local heritage. Its style mirrors the immersive, narrative approach used in the tunnel, but with a stronger focus on village life rather than literary imagery.
In December 2025, Rutterford completed an additional section of the mural, extending the artwork from one end of the lane to the other. This final phase introduced new elements, including Highland cows being led around a corner — a playful nod to the drovers who once passed through the area. Rutterford noted that this section was particularly photogenic and quickly became a favourite spot for visitors.
Today, the Cuddies Lane mural stands as a vibrant gateway between Colinton Village and the Colinton Tunnel, forming a continuous artistic route that celebrates both the community’s creativity and its deep historical roots. Together, the tunnel and lane murals represent nearly a decade of collaborative artistic development, strengthening Colinton’s identity as a place where heritage, imagination, and community pride meet.
