Colinton Gateway Art Project

Colinton Art Trail : A Three-Phase Community Project

The Colinton Art Trail is an evolving community initiative celebrating the heritage, creativity, and character of Colinton through large‑scale public artworks. Developed over several years, the trail brings colour and storytelling to key routes through the village, connecting local history with contemporary artistic expression. The project is unfolding in three distinct phases.

Phase 1 — The Colinton Tunnel Mural

The first phase began with the transformation of the disused railway tunnel on the Water of Leith walkway. Led by muralist Chris Rutterford, this 140‑metre artwork was created between 2019 and 2021 with contributions from more than 600 local young people. Inspired by From a Railway Carriage by Robert Louis Stevenson, the mural has become one of Scotland’s most celebrated community artworks and a landmark on National Cycle Network Route 75.

Phase 2 — The Cuddies Lane Mural

Building on the success of the tunnel, Phase 2 focused on revitalising Cuddies Lane, the pedestrian route connecting Colinton Village to Spylaw Street. Commissioned by the Colinton Community Association and completed in 2025, this mural — also created by Chris Rutterford, with support from local artist Eddie Banks — celebrates Colinton’s village life, trades, and heritage. It now forms a colourful gateway leading visitors towards the tunnel. (Click here to read more about Cuddies Lane's Mural)

Phase 3 — Spylaw Street to Spylaw Park (In Development)

The third phase of the art trail is currently in development. This planned extension will continue the artistic route from Spylaw Street down towards Spylaw Park, creating a continuous visual journey through the heart of Colinton. Colinton Community Association is exploring new ideas, themes, and community partnerships for this next stage, and welcomes creative input from residents and local groups as the project takes shape.
